A 29-year-old security guard attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital was yesterday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate, Melissa Robertson, for threatening language.
It was alleged that Leslie Shortt of Lot 160 Waterloo Street, threatened Karen Fontenoe. He was also charged with assaulting her at Waterloo Street.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was unrepresented in court.
According to Shortt, on the day in question he went home with the intention of moving out, since he and the woman were having problems.
He said that as he was attempting to do that, the woman attacked him. He said that the entire incident came about because Fontenoe knows that he is on a bond to keep the peace.
When asked by the magistrate to explain what transpired, the VC told the court that she was choked by the defendant who had a knife in his hand.
She further told the court that she did not wish to continue with the matter. She has a baby for Shortt and he supports the family, she said.
However, Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith told the court that a number of persons believe that the police do not intervene in these matters, but a majority of the time the victim refuses to testify and then something tragic would happen.
“My worship when the police execute their duties and arrest the perpetrators, the victim would come to the court and say that they do not wish to testify, and when they return home some get murdered”.
According to the prosecutor, this is not the first time that the defendant was charged with assaulting Fontenoe. He ran her with a knife and it was the neighbour who had to fight him off, the prosecutor said.
Bail was denied and the accused is expected to make another court appearance on July 2.
