Guyana is yearning to win the Caribbean Senior Table Tennis Championships’ team titles and as a result, the best team from a previous shortlist of several contenders was deduced to compete at the event in Cayenne, French Guyana.
General Secretary of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Godfrey Munroe, in a recent interview with Kaieteur Sport, stated that the association is garnering momentum for a title shot at the prestigious regional forum.
“We have named a team for the Caribbean Championships. We want to give it a good run and we are going to reclaim the title. It’s not out of our reach,” Munroe said. Guyana has confirmed participation at the July 20-26 event.
The General Secretary believes that Guyana “was never able to put together a good team” that gave the country adequate chances to win a title in recent times. Guyana last won the team titles in 1973 and 1974 respectively.
Guyana hosted the championships at Queen’s College in 1973 and won the Men’s Team title, defeating Trinidad and Tobago 5-4 in the final. Mike Baptiste, the team’s captain, had won the decisive rubber against T&T’s number one, Mansingh Amarsingh.
The other members on that historic Men’s squad were Garth Isaacs and Gordon Stephens. Guyana last won the Women’s team competition in 1974 in Barbados with Barbara Jekir, Carol Davidson, Jeanette Camacho and Doreen Chow Wah.
“I think all our focus is on putting together the best calibre players available. We will try to have everything in place including training for the players, so that our chances could be sure from now to the Championships,” Munroe said.
The GTTA administrator informed that the usual bugbear of funding for national teams is not a major concern since French Guiana is a neighbour. “The cost is not prohibitive and we will be addressing our shortfalls,” he indicated.
This newspaper was told that Michelle John, who is currently on scholarship at Linwood University in the United States, is available and will play with Trenace Lowe, Jody-Ann Blake and Natalie Cummings in the Women’s event.
The Men’s team include international campaigner, Idi Lewis, United States–based, Paul David, Christopher Franklyn and Mathew Khan. Colin France and US-based, Sydney Christophe will play in the Masters’ competition.
Munroe informed that the Caribbean Federation has introduced a new Under-21 category into the championships and as such, the GTTA have selected Nigel Bryan and Lowe to bring honours in the grouping.
