Pandemonium broke out last evening at the Georgetown Public Hospital as the relatives of 32-year old Sharmine McKay had their worst fears realised. McKay had died and news of her demise sent shock waves within her community and family.
Mc Kay was stabbed multiple times about the body last Wednesday night, allegedly by her reputed husband, Marlon Braithwaite. The blade of the knife had broken and was left stuck in the woman’s abdomen.
She sustained stab wounds to the head and hand, and abrasions to the face and arms. McKay had told this newspaper that Braithwaite had also thrown kerosene down her throat.
According to a relative who was at the hospital last evening, the blade was removed from Mc Kay’s abdomen, but that the injured woman was still complaining about a “burning sensation” in her stomach.
“Although they tek out de blade from she belly, Sharmine was still crying out for this burning sensation in her stomach, and we ask de nurse and she told us that she was being treated for that,” the relative explained.
The alleged attacker was charged and remanded to prison last Friday. Police sources said that since McKay has died, Braithwaite would be charged with the capital offence.
McKay was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, on Wednesday evening by neighbours who discovered her lying in a pool of blood on her front steps.
Neighbours said that after discovering McKay’s body, they quickly wrapped her with pieces of cloth and rushed her to the hospital.
As the neighbours were attempting to lift the injured woman off the steps, McKay turned and asked if they could have taken the knife out of her since it was still lodged in her abdomen.
Neighbours had also told this newspaper that the woman’s clothing and some articles in her home were all soaked with kerosene, prompting them to think that the suspect was attempting to burn the victim and the house. Another neighbour who was present at the hospital, told Kaieteur News that McKay had endured an abusive relationship with the suspect for the past two years.
Recounting to two weeks back when Braithwaite allegedly lashed McKay in the face with a cutlass .The woman subsequently reported the matter to the police”. He was later charged and remanded.
However, the suspect was granted bail in the High Court and was out on the streets.
McKay’s death added to the growing list of domestic cases which have been spiraling out of control.
