Boxers are generally regarded as braggarts and oft times, despite vicious pre-fight verbal exchanges, many fights fizz out to dull encounters, forcing boxing buffs to treat any future boasts as just idle talk.
That may be so but there have been instances when the fighters promised bruising encounters and delivered the goods, much to the delight of their fans. Recently boxing fans have been inundated with verbal attacks as boxers attempt to gain the initiative before actual combat.
Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes versus Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton against Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis and Lewis against Eastman were all punctuated with scalding remarks and deadly threats.
All of these encounters have produced the goods and fans are beginning to believe that the vitriolic comments hurled at each other by boxers preparing for combat can no longer be taken with the proverbial ‘pinch of salt.’
A few days ago, Leon Hurry Up’ Moore and Dexter Marques signed contracts to engage in a 12-round encounter for Marques’ bantamweight title. Both have since opened camp in the Albouystown area – Marques at the Forgotten Youth Foundation and Moore at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym.
Yesterday afternoon, Kaieteur Sport visited the two gyms to evaluate the progress of both fighters. Moore, under the tutelage of Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels is currently engaged in what his coach describes as general preparation. This period, according to Daniels, prepares his charge for the rigorous sessions ahead, starting from Sunday when ‘Hurry Up’ engages in several rounds of sparring. His resources in this department are limited but Daniels envisions that the situation would soon improve.
At the moment, Moore will be sparring with female boxer, Debbie Tyson along with Paul Moore (jnr). He will also engage several less experienced fighters in an attempt to hone his speed.
Dexter Marques is leaving nothing to chance. Already, he has commenced sparring sessions and his coach, Joseph Murray, has intimated that he has completed in excess of 20 rounds to date. Murray also said that Marques would be exposed to a stiff training regimen in preparation for what he regards as the toughest fight of his life.
“We plan to wrap up sparring sessions very early since there are some tactical applications we need to experiment with,” Murray assures. He said that Marques would also be required to spar two12-round sessions, “just to give him a feel of the real fight.”
When asked to predict an outcome Murray was very cagey, “I would not want to predict a knockout or anything, but at the end of the fight Dexter would be the winner,” the former bantamweight pugilist remarked. Murray further noted that his charge is definitely hungrier than his opponent and that hunger would be decisive in the outcome of the fight. As the war of words flow, boxing buffs would obviously want to be kept informed of the boxers’ progress in order to ascertain if they are truly capable of carrying out their threats. Kaieteur Sport would be there every step of the way keeping the public informed.
