Leave for Colorado next week

Proprietor of the Windjammer Cuisine and Inn, Carey Harris (left) makes a contribution to Lugard Mohan (centre) and Aubrey Younge yesterday.
Lugard Mohan and Aubrey Younge will attempt to increase the number of internationally accredited referees’ in Guyana, when the duo participate in a Referees’ Course that will be held in Colorado, United States of American.
The two local referees are expected to depart Guyana on June 16 for the Course that runs between June 18 and 22 at the Olympic Centre. The US Basketball Association had made the two places available to the Guyanese officials.
Mohan, who is a former national basketball captain and Caribbean All-star, told Kaieteur Sport that it is an excellent opportunity to get more accredited referees in Guyana. Mohan made it clear that the course will be challenging.
“It’s a challenge but we are going through some training now to reach the requirement of the three aspects,” Mohan stated.
The programme is usually conducted in theoretical and physical/practical phases that must be passed.
Guyana was not successful at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in previous years and as such, Sherwin Henry is the only accredited local referee. The other official, Howard Peters had failed his recertification exam.
Henry succeeded at his recertification in Barbados last year while US-based Peters failed his in Canada. Younge said that he was looking forward to an opportunity to get certified for a long time and was elated with this chance.
“After my days of playing, I thought that I should become an official to give back to the sport, which is why we are going–to change Guyana’s track record,” Younge pointed out yesterday, at the Windjammer Cuisine and Inn.
Guyana had sent many local referees to the FIBA certification course when it was held in the Caribbean, but they were not successful. The rigorous programme qualifies referees to officiate at regional and international competitions.
Proprietor of the Windjammer Cuisine and Inn, Carey Harris, who mobilised sponsorship for the two officials, said that he hopes the private sector be more supportive of the sport now that it is clearly going in the right direction.
“Aubrey and Lugard are two of the pioneers of basketball in Guyana and a lot of people should see them as valuable contributors to basketball,” Harris indicated, adding that without sponsorship the sport cannot progress.
Nigel’s Supermarket, Cell Smart, E.C Vieira Investments, Pomeroon Oil Mill, Patterson Associates, John Fernandes, Dyna’s Embroidery, Windjammer, Guyana Power and Light, HJTV and Noble House Seafoods have come forward with sponsorship so far.
