HJTV and Lens Craft Inter-Ward Basketball Final: North Ruimveldt sweep Wortmanville to retain title

There was definitely an aesthetic and psychological effect attached to North Ruimveldt’s game one win that resulted in self assurance and ruthlessness as the team clinically swept Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust Sunday night.
The fight that Wortmanville brought to the first game against a clearly talented North unit evaporated in game two. The consequence was an 85-59 thrashing that wrapped up HJTV and Lens Craft’s Inter-Ward Basketball Final.
The writings were on the wall from the first whistle and it was clear that arguably the best swingman and leading MVP candidate, Andrew ‘Mr. Dunk’ Ifill came to win the title – his game had tenets of finesse and lucid superiority.
Ifill drilled fade-away jumpers, three-pointers, finished dunks and effectively got the role players involved on his way to 26 points and eight rebounds. Wortmanville was terribly short of defensive options for the top player.
Guard Ryan Stephney also brought his ‘A’ game with 15 points while Damian Liverpool scored 11. North’s guest player from Linden, Quincy Jones added 10 points along with seven rebounds to complete a collective effort.
North’s captain, Darcel Harris told Kaieteur Sport after the game that his charges arrived at the arena with an execution plan. Harris said that the primary motivation was to sweep Wortmanville and the team worked to the end.
“We knew we wanted to take care of business tonight (Sunday) so we went out with the energy to play pressure defence from the start and force them (Wortmanville) to go to their bench. We just came out hard,” Harris stated.
Wortmanville showed very little resistance, if any at all, throughout the game. Essentially the team just went through the motions and never held a lead. North won all the quarters 17-9, 46-27 and 61-47 in an emphatic manner.

The only thing they had going for them was a group of enthusiastic fans that clapped and cheered for them to the end. Wortmanville’s captain, Naylon Loncke blamed their routine on fitness because of the consecutive final setting.
Loncke and Aubrey Smith led Wortmanville on offence with 12 points each. “The bottom line is that back-to-back games killed us. We just didn’t have the fitness. We tried to play zone defence but that plan failed,” Loncke said.
North knew how to get pass Wortmanville’s zone defence. They had a high percentage of jump shots that broke down the zone. “The guys went to man-to-man defence and I told them we cannot win like that,” Loncke informed.
North took home $500,000 and the championship trophy, while Wortmanville pocketed $300,000. Albouystown/Charlestown edged South Ruimveldt 70-67 to with the $100,000 third prize. South will collect $50,000 for fourth.
Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts had 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Rodwell Fortune and Trevor McCleod added 14 and 10 points respectively for Albouystown. Steve Neils Jr. scored 30 and Clarence Bennett 14 points for South.
