Dear Editor,
On behalf of concerned parents, I wish to draw the attention of the education officials to the undesirable state of affairs at a private school in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The building itself needs to be repaired urgently. Whenever it rains, students are left to the mercy of the elements and have to contend with water that splashes in and wets them, through one section of a wall.
In addition, it is alleged that ventilation is poor. And the classrooms are smelly. The kitchen is said to be in a deplorable state and the food unhealthy. We are calling on the sanitary officer to immediately make an inspection of food preparation at the school to certify that the hygienic standards are adhered to.
Instead of having the welcome amenities of proper washroom facilities, the students are allegedly forced to endure the obnoxious scents exuding from rundown washrooms. Moreover, some say that students are not afforded the benefit of lab facilities that are crucial in the preparation of S.B.A’s and in conducting experiments required for science subjects. Reportedly, the teaching staff is underpaid and is not adequately remunerated for overtime hours.
Several instances have been cited where students were harassed, humiliated and embarrassed by the principal for not paying the exorbitant fees promptly. There have been complaints of teachers being ill treated often and not recompensed any real benefits in their noble profession that they are entitled to.
This individual, who allegedly collects payments for S.B.A’s, does so at his behest and whose conduct as a senior official leaves a lot to be desired. Stop squeezing poor people and strive to create not a ‘rip-off’, but a wholesome environment conducive to higher learning for both students and teachers, which they deserve Name and Address Withheld
