Balram Samaroo stroked a magnificent unbeaten 104 and Anil Beharry snatched 6-34 in wasted efforts for Young Warriors at the Rose Hall Canje ground last Sunday.
The pair will have to try and reproduce their excellent form Saturday at the same venue after their semi-final match in the Busta Champion of Champions 50-overs, Berbice first division cricket competition ended in a tie. The tournament was organied by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC).
With two to win from the final ball and the last pair at the crease, Fiaz Latif (0) was run out attempting a second run as Young Warriors were dismissed for 216 replying to the 216-9 off 46 overs made by Rose Hall Canje.
Saturday’s game was reduced by four overs per side due to seepage onto the pitch from overnight rain and the winners of this Saturday’s replayed encounter clash with Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar in the final. West Berbice lost by 23 runs in the other semi-final also played on Saturday.
In sultry conditions, a vocal crowd watched as Rose Hall Canjie slumped to 91-7 after they were asked to bat on a fast outfield and slow track.
Beharry, a 39-year-old former Berbice One-Day left-arm spinner, befuddled the top order to take six of the first seven wickets to fall, before a brutal 84 from teenager Vishal Singh and a supporting 37 from Devin Gopaul rallied their team to 184 before the pair was separated.
Singh clobbered 7 sixes and 3 fours, adding 93 with Gopaul as they staged ‘operation rebuild’ with pugnacious batting.
Opener Rocky Bispat, who hit six fours in his even half-century batted responsibly even as Beharry, who played at the senior Inter-County level from 1995-’97, troubled all the batsmen.
When Young Warriors replied the 27-year-old Samaroo batted enterprisingly after coming in at number four in the order. He struck 9 fours and f sixes in his undefeated ton.
The left-handed Samaroo produced an almost ‘one-man show’, as only the powerful Beharry who struck 2 sixes and 2 fours in a cameo 29, offered any support. Left-arm spinner Sean Jhetoo took 4-45 and Rafik Kassim 2-50.
