Upsets were the order of the day in opening action of the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB)-organised Indoor Tournament which started on Monday, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The first sign of things to come was witnessed in the Old Fort ‘A’ versus GCC ‘B’ clash which the latter won 7-4 after leading 3-1 at the break.
On target for the winners were Shaka Gill, who netted a brace, while there was one apiece for Andrew Xavier, Trevon Smith, Stuart Gonsalves, Chris Xavier and Leonard George. For Old Fort ‘A’ national player John Abrahams lashed in a hat-trick, while Dwayne Alleyne netted the other.
The next unexpected result came in the encounter that featured the Ladies national team against GCC Tigers.
The Tigers held off a spirited challenge from the nationals to win 5-4 after enjoying a 4-2 ascendancy at the half.
Nationals Kerensa Fernandes (2), Sonia Jardine (1), Brenette Gordon (1) and Tiffany Solomon (1), all entered the score-sheet for the Tigers. For the Nationals, Gabriella Xavier, Cora Towler, Amanda Garnette and Carol Caine were the players on target.
In the next surprising result, Hikers ‘A’ hammered the Nationals 10-5 after a close first period which ended 3-2 in their favour.
Jerazeno Bell found the back of the net five times, while Devin Munroe added 2 and Robert France, Randy Hope and Alex Gouveia with one each completed the tally.
For the Nationals, Dwayne Scott scored a pair, while L. George, Aderemi Simon and J. Abrahams each netted one.
In the other results: Hikers ‘B’ routed Old Fort ‘B’ by a 7-0 margin. Akeem Thompson and Ryan Primo each scored a double, while Shaquille Assanah, Andrew Stewart and Michael Hardin tucked in 1 goal each.
GCC ‘A’ then clobbered Western Dragons 12-2 with Kevin Spencer netting 6 goals, while D. Scott added a helmet-trick and Alan Fernandes and Orland Semple completed the tally. For the Dragons, only Deon Carew managed to enter the score-sheet.
Degenerates then defeated Dragons 3-0 with Troy Peters, Timothy Jonas and James Mentore, the goal-scorers.
The competition continues this evening with four matches at the same venue.
