– Morgan ruled out of competition
By Edison Jefford
National Track and Field coach, Raymond Daw said that preparations for today’s start of Inter–Guiana Games (IGG) was not ideal and Alika Morgan was ruled out of competition but host Guyana should still dominate the event.
Daw told Kaieteur Sport yesterday afternoon at the track and field venue, the Police Sport Club Ground, Eve Leary, that preparations were “not as we would have liked” because of the intermittent rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“The athletes were confined to an indoor facility where they could not have fully carried out their programmes. But still our chances are very good based on our performance from the beginning of this year,” Daw indicated.
The track and field coach believes that with the likes of this year’s Carifta gold medallist, Jevina Straker, silver medallists, Ricardo Martin and bronze medallist, Ricardo Martin, Guyana’s potential is significantly enhanced.
However, the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) President, Colin Boyce informed this newspaper late yesterday afternoon that the team suffered a major blow when Alika Morgan’s injury ruled her out of the competition.
According to Boyce, two physiotherapists ruled that the athlete’s injured ankle would be unable to undergo the rigours of competition. “I was just informed that two separate physiotherapists ruled Morgan unfit,” Boyce said.
The ruling on the injury confirmed assumptions that the impediment was responsible for her uncharacteristic performance at the Carifta Games. Morgan suffered the recurring injury some weeks before her Carifta appearance.
The AAG head indicated that, up to press time yesterday, the association was pondering a possible replacement for Morgan.
He said that he believes Guyana will come out on top in the track and field competition despite the set back.
“I don’t know what our opposition is like but I know our athletes and based on what I can ascertain, Guyana will go out there to demolish our opposition,” Boyce said, adding that he is confident that track and field will do its part.
Apart from the Carifta Games medallists and the absence of Morgan, Guyana will depend on sprint sensation, Triston Joseph, Roxanna Rigby, Nadine Rodrigues and field events school stars, Winston Caesar and Lowanda Whaul.
The track and field competition gets underway at 11am today following an official opening ceremony at the Police Sports Club Ground.
