Sasenarine Bisoondial and his wife Indrawattie Mohabir stand in front of the rubble that was once their home
A midnight fire believed to be the work of arsonists destroyed a two-bedroom house at Lot 14, Annandale Last Street, East Coast Demerara, leaving a couple homeless.
Indrawattie Mohabir, and her reputed husband Sasenarine Bisoondial were not at home when they received a call from a neighbour that fire had engulfed their home.
They expressed that they were not too surprised since they had received threats that their house would be burned down by persons in the area who had accused them of informing the Guyana Power and Light about electricity theft.
This, of course, they vehemently denied.
Speaking to Kaieteur News, Mohabir said that they had secured their house, a 23’X 14’ wooden structure, with two bedrooms in the upper flat and a room at the bottom and were staying at the home of a relative who was out of the country.
She said that the building did not have electricity and therefore the origin of the fire could not have been electrical. She also explained that the last time she was at the house was three days prior to the blaze, so there was no issue of her leaving anything burning.
“Since Wednesday me nah come home back. Is last night when me hear fire, den me come home back. When we come, everything de done burn,” she said.
A distraught Bisoondial said that although he had no electricity, he had left his television, CD player and cash in the house.
“Ah get a lot of threats on his line top. Dem threaten fuh bun down me house, and me gon gat fuh move out. People doing illegal things hey with current and every time dem get catch, dem say ah me. Dem seh me ah see too much,” Bisoondial told Kaieteur News.
He said that he had made several reports to the police but nothing was done about it.
He disclosed that he has given the name of the persons who had threatened him to a detective who was at the scene of the fire.
Police sources told this newspaper that they have not yet detained anyone for questioning.
Bissondial estimates his losses at $1.5M at the minimum.
For now, he and his wife will remain at the relative’s house until their heads are clear as to how they will proceed with their lives.
