War of Words as GASP stages Nationals Preliminaries
Twelve of the countries top scrabble players will match wits this morning at the Malteenoes Sports Club when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages an ‘A’ Level tournament for players rated above 1600.
Those slated to compete in this morning’s tournament are, Ewart Adams, Fred Collins, Abigail McDonald, William Woolford, James Krakowsky, Moen Gafoor, Ulric Harris, Colin Chichester, Leon Belony, Floyd Carmichael, Orlando Michael and Julian Skeete.
Three other players, Grace Hercules, Ruby Cummings and RO Michael, will not participate in this morning’s championship but nevertheless will qualify, by dint of their current ratings, for the impending national championships.
The other lowly rated players will compete against each other to earn the final ten places available to compete for the national championship slated for May 1, 5 and 10.
The two top players will then compete in a best of five, tournament to determine the national champion. Usually, the national champion goes on to represent Guyana at the World Championships but a source close to GASP revealed that Guyana’s participation at this prestigious tournament is in doubt. He did not elaborate.
In recent times, Michael Carter and Fred Collins have represented Guyana at the World Championships but both returned empty handed. Last year, Nigel Richards of New Zealand carted off the honours.
