Canada-based Guyanese and former Malteenoes Sports Club player Victor Dias made good on a promise he made to present a bat to opening batsman Imran ‘Taliban’ Hassan should he complete a century in their Cellink Plus 3-day fixture against the Guyana Defence Force recently.
Dias, who returned home lately to participate in the club’s ‘Old School’ cricket match, that was also graced with the presence of a few former West Indian and Malteenoes players such as Ian Bishop and Colwin Cort, had witnessed Hassan’s unfinished innings on the first day against the Army and was so pleased with his performance that he immediately pledged to present him with a bat should he chalk up his maiden First Division century which he duly completed the following day.
Acting on behalf of the donor was former Guyana Middle order batsman Neil Barry, who presented the gift to the batsman.
Hassan, who went on to reach 120, before he was eventually dismissed has been in tremendous form since the start of the season, hitting a few half centuries against other opposition.
The match also saw, national player Orin Forde scoring a century (109) and Barry disclosed that he too will receive a bat, compliments of Dias shortly.
In an invited comment with Kaieteur Sport, Hassan said that he would like to extend his thanks to Dias for the gesture and was confident that the gift will help inspire him to do even better in the competition.
“It was my first century at this level and I’m very happy and the bat will help me improve my performances,” Hassan pointed out.
Quizzed on what he would attribute his recent rich vein of form to, the opening batsman revealed that he had done a lot of preparatory work prior to the start of competition with a lot of focus on his batting.
“I hope that I can continue my good run and help my team win the tournament outright.”
Meanwhile, Malteenoes went on to win the match by an innings and 139 runs.
Scores: GDF batted first and made 154 all out. Malteenoes in reply declared on 319-3 with Hassan 120 and Forde 109. GDF in their second stint at the crease were routed for a paltry 26.
The competition continues tomorrow with two more matches. At Everest, the homesters entertain GCC, while at DCC, the host play against Malteenoes.
All matches commence from 09:30 hrs.
In the Cummings Electrical/Raymond Panday Second Division Competition, four matches have been planned with Everest vs G.C.C at Everest; D.C.C vs Malteenoes at D.C.C; G.D.F vs Police at Malteenoes and Transport vs G.N.I.C at G.D.F.
Matches start at 11:30 hrs.
