I couldn’t be happier to read in one of the newsprints a few days back about GPL requesting suggestions/ideas from the public in connection with the beautifying of the newly modified railway embankment.
Being a tourism advocate, I am very passionate about the preservation of historical artifacts/sites because they play a pivotal role with the marketing aspect of that sector. My expectation will be one with a little twist.
That is, in remembrance of the “Train Services” which was an integral part of our transportation services many years ago, it would be extremely wise to have a replica in the form of a “Train Site” erected similar to a monument or shrine. Of course, this will be an addition to other forthcoming suggestions and I don’t see that there should be any debate on this idea.
The site in mind would be next to the North Georgetown School around Lamaha and Irving Streets.
Sorry, but I was never too good with in depth directions.
This will also need the engagement of THAG, which can organise a competition for concepts of a “Train Site”, and GPL can organise some attractive prizes for contributors.
Maybe some consolation prizes of electricity for a year.
The above is to keep alive some memories of part of our history/culture for generations in the making and THAG might also consider running with a story in their “2010 Explore Guyana Magazine” which should also include some past photos of the Train Site.
