Murder accused Fernando Cush is escorted to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Fernando Cush, 26, appeared in court yesterday before Magistrate Yohhahnseh Cave at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, charged with the murder of his uncle Andrew Benjamin.
Cush, who was not required to plead and who was represented by defence counsel Vic Puran, was remanded to prison.
On Tuesday, 41-year-old canecutter, Andrew Benjamin, was knifed to death in an alleyway at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, during an altercation with Cush.
Benjamin, called “Mongoose”, of Lot 66 Friendship, East Coast Demerara, collapsed from multiple stab wounds to the upper body and succumbed before he could receive medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Cush reportedly fled the scene, but was subsequently detained and taken to the GPHC with a wound to the head, which he said he sustained during the altercation with the victim.
During yesterday’s court proceedings, the accused appeared calm while relatives, some in support and others showing visible anger, stood apart.
One family member remarked, “Look how he throw away he life.”
Cush is to return to court on May 4.
