Niles to defend Cheddi Jagan Essequibo 50-mile title

When the 2nd annual Cheddi Jagan memorial 50-mile cycle road race pedals off on the Essequibo Coast on Sunday, Junior Niles will be taking the challenge to his rivals as he seeks to retain glory in the Cinderella County.
Niles whipped the field in the inaugural race finishing in a time of 2 hours 18 minutes 56.42 seconds coming ahead of Robin Persaud, veteran Raymond Newton, John Charles, Lear Nunes and Jaikarran Sukhai in that order.
Like last year, this race will be without a number of leading guns, the likes of Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Alonzo Greaves, Geron Williams and Christopher Holder among others, who are all competing in Trinidad and Tobago. Their absence strengthens Niles’ quest for victory but he would have to pull out all the stops with a number of potent riders still around.
Dexter Wilson will start as favourite to make it two out of two in the upright division.
The first six riders to cross the line will receive prizes as will the first three juniors, upright and veteran cyclists.
Eight prime prizes will be at stake during the course of the race which is sponsored by El Dorado Trading and Suresh Jagmohan.
Transportation for cyclists and officials will leave the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, Main Street at 05:00hrs on Sunday.
