Peter’s Hall couple wants answers for death of newborn son
A couple from Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, is calling on the relevant authority for a thorough investigation into the death of their newborn son at Prasad’s Hospital.
According to the mother, Grace Chatterpaul, her son’s death was as a result of nurses’ negligence at the hospital.
The woman told this newspaper that on Tuesday, around midnight she started to experience labour pains. She said that she immediately left her home with her husband for the hospital.
According to Chatterpaul when she arrived at the hospital she was taken straight into the delivery room.
While in delivery room she said that an elderly nurse clipped her water bag and upon doing so the nurse mentioned to her that, “the baby mess (defecated) in you and it ain’t looking good at all”.
She added that after this was related to her she overheard the nurse communicating with a doctor on the telephone relating to him what was going on in the delivery room.
Chatterpaul said at different intervals the nurse kept checking her and monitoring the baby’s heartbeat.
She said while in labour pain the nurse kept informing her of the baby’s heart rate but the doctor only arrived to do the delivery some five hours later.
She recalled that when the doctor arrived, she too kept checking for the baby’s heartbeat but there was none.
“So the doctor called the nurse and enquired if she was getting heartbeat all the time…The doctor then tell me to push which I did and the baby was out,” Chatterpaul said.
She added that the nurses immediately rushed out of the room with the baby without saying anything but she knew that something was wrong with her baby.
“It was not until I hear my husband crying outside that I realise that my baby was dead…the nurse just come inside and ask me if I wanted to see the baby and they just showed me my son,”.
The couple believes that their baby would have been alive if the doctor had been throughout the delivery.
The couple has since penned a letter to the Ministry of Health seeking assistance for a thorough investigation.
