Legendary West Indian batsman, Sir Vivian Richards, who is now the Brand Ambassador for Johnnie Walker in the region, brought the ‘Know Your Boundaries’ campaign that is aimed a responsible drinking to Guyana yesterday.
“It is important to be responsible. I would not be involved in this campaign if I did not believe in it,” Richards told the media and a large public gathering that converged on Main Street yesterday to get a glimpse of the icon.
The message was clear: ‘don’t drink and drive’ and a series of simulations was asserted to give patrons an idea of the consequences of the opposite
. The event was organised as part of the official English tour in the Caribbean.
“When I am sober I am more in control.
I found out it [drinking and driving] don’t work,” Richards said, while adding that his personal experiences has thought him that the two extremes are irresponsible.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony said that while it is not possible to stop people from drinking, the move toward responsible drinking is more practical and one that can be pursued like the Johnnie Walker campaign.
“People won’t stop drinking but what we can do is urge them to be responsible.
I think it is an excellent campaign. I hope it [the message] won’t stop at this campaign,” he said, adding that people must understand the consequences.
Meanwhile, Regional Spokesperson for Johnnie Walker, Stuart Kirby, said that this initial campaign in Guyana “have been quite positive”. He indicated that the company wanted to encourage people and patrons in the right way.
After these formal proceedings, Richards signed hundreds of autographs while onlookers also took photo opportunities.
A brief net session was organised with Richards for the young people that never saw him bat in his heyday.
