Head of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, James Singh, after being given all assurances that he would be attending the 14th annual US-sponsored Drug Commanders’ Conference in St Kitts and Nevis, was prevented from doing so on Saturday.
The United States Government had extended an invitation to the CANU Head to attend the five-day conference. It has been three years since the Americans have invited Guyana.
The Guyana Government reportedly delayed forwarding a response, and only did so last Thursday when the Americans requested a response on whether Singh would be attending the conference.
But on Saturday Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee telephoned Singh, informing him that he would no longer be attending the conference. When contacted yesterday, Minister Rohee stated that he did not wish to comment on the issue.
A source close to the Home Affairs Ministry said that the decision to pull Singh at the last minute would surely anger the Americans, whom President Bharrat Jagdeo have criticised of being less than open to Guyana in connection with information on Guyanese drug dealers and investigations into these.
