When local powerhouse, Alpha United, clash with Tempete Football Club of Haiti at the world famous Guyana Cricket Club Saturday in the Caribbean football club championship, the Hammer will be going all out to erase a 36 year defeat.
The last time a Haitian team visited the ‘Land of Many Waters’ was January of 1973, on that occasion it was the Haiti National Team which stopped over for two warm up games in preparation for their 1974 World Cup campaign.
In the first match played at the Guyana Sports Club Ground the visitors won by a margin of three goals to one and one nil in the second encounter at the same venue.
The National Team for those encounters was as follows: Ken Gibbs (Capt.), Earl O’Neil, Burdett Marshall, Ovid Henry, Clement Henry, Lennox Arthur, Desmond Morgan, Bobby Fernandes, Dennis Hunte, Cardo Williams, Lloyd King, George Hyles, Alvin Braithwaite, Maurice Enmore, Zagalo Egerton, D. Clarke, and Godfrey Norville with George Green the coach.
Let’s see if National captain Charles Lily Pollard, who was born the same year but after that historical event, could motivate his troops and break the Haitian Jinx. Charwayne Walker
