An early morning raid at Middle Road La Penitence yesterday resulted in the wounding of yet another member of the ill-fated Hescott family.
Around 09:30 hours yesterday, 19-year-old Ryan Hescott was shot in the right arm by police ranks during the raid. Three of Hescott’s siblings have died by the bullet, and family members are thanking their lucky stars that he was not added to the list.
As usual with most police shootings, there are two sides of the story. The police are claiming that Hescott fired at them, and it was during the confrontation they returned fire and Hescott was wounded.
In a police statement, it was noted that an unlicensed .38 Taurus revolver along with four rounds and two spent shells were recovered by the police. The police stated that they were at the time searching for a wanted man called Alpha Hudson when they were fired upon by Hescott. The police stated that Hudson managed to escape.
Alpha Hudson is wanted by the police for the murder of Elton Fullington, who was fatally stabbed on June 23, 2005 at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, during an altercation over a mini-bus passenger.
Andrew Rodney of Bourda, Georgetown, was charged in that matter and has been committed to stand trial at the High Court. Also during the raid, Ryan Hescott’s brother Leon and another friend were detained by police, and up to press time yesterday they were still in custody.
Meanwhile, this incident has sparked much anger among the Hescott family.
According to the wounded man’s relatives, the police during their operation showed no professionalism when they first stormed a neighbour’s yard and began shooting indiscriminately, forcing children, including a toddler, to seek cover by throwing themselves to the ground.
One eyewitness to the incident said he was walking through the alley leading to the Hescott’s yard when he saw armed policemen running towards him.
He claimed that he was going there to pick up Ryan Hescott’s brother, Leon, to attend a church service in the National Park.
“Imagine I going to pick up me friend fuh we go to church, and de police just come scramble he by he hair and asking he if he name ‘Alpha’ and, although de boy telling them he ain’t name Alpha, dem still carry he and lock he up,” the eyewitness recalled.
The man also stated that his friend’s mother also intervened and pleaded with the ranks that the boy they held was not the person they were looking for, but they continued to drag the man, who was only clad in a bath towel, toward the police vehicle. “I just had to tek off me church clothes and give me friend, because de police didn’t want he go in he own house fuh put on clothes,” the eyewitness said.
Another relative recalled that, while the other police ranks were busy with Leon Hescott, more police ranks had already stormed the yard from the back and Ryan was shot.
“By the time I run to see wha happen with Ryan he was already on the ground bleeding, and he keep begging de police not to shoot at him again,” the relative said. Family members denied that Ryan Hescott had a weapon and insisted that the gun the police claimed to have retrieved was planted.
“Ryan lie down in de grass bleeding and holding onto he hand, and a short police pull a gun from he waist and throw it in de mud, which was a few feet away from where Ryan was lying,” a relative said.
“Den de police pick up back de gun and shout out: ‘Look ah find de gun’,” the relative continued.
On April 17 2007, Ryan’s brother Dave Hescott was found dead in the Le Repentir cemetery with a gunshot wound to the head in what appears to be another execution-style killing.
The relatives are claiming that, while the police continue to harass the Hescott family, Dave Hescott’s killer is still roaming the area a free man.
In November 2006 another brother Shawn Hescott was gunned down, a stone’s throw from his home, as he sat on a horse-cart chatting with his girlfriend and another woman.
In November 1996, Winston Hescott was shot and killed by police at Madewini on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway. Meanwhile, according to the police, Ryan Hescott is presently before the court on charges of robbery under arms, possession of a firearm without licence, and possession of ammunition without licence.
He has been admitted under guard at the GPHC.
