The police are likely to make more arrests in connection with the cocaine bust (reportedly 10kg/22lbs) at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, on Friday last.
According to a source, the suspect, Asante D’Aguiar is cooperating fully with the police and has given names and addresses which may possibly lead to the conspirator.
A source close to the family told Kaieteur News that the young lady had migrated from Guyana with her mother and two other sisters some years ago. While in Guyana she resided at West Ruimveldt Front Road area.
The source further told Kaieteur News that the woman had come to Guyana in December at the request of a boyfriend who resides in Guyana. The same boyfriend, according to the source, is wanted for questioning for the cocaine bust. The source explained that “she only came to Guyana December and we surprise to hear she coming for Mash”.
Her mother also questioned her as to why she was visiting Guyana so often but D’Aguiar brushed off her mother’s questions, stating that she was coming to visit her boyfriend.
Another suspicion for the family was that D’Aguiar only bought a one-way ticket to Guyana which prompted more questions from the suspect’s mother. D’Aguiar in turn told her mother that her boyfriend would be buying her a return ticket for the United States.
The source said that after D’Aguiar was nabbed at the airport, the “boyfriend” called her mother in the US informing her about what happened.
The boyfriend allegedly told D’Aguiar’s mother that everything would be looked after and her daughter would return home shortly.
D’Aguiar’s family is speculating that she may have been encouraged by the boyfriend to attempt something so stupid and reckless. The family is also speculating that she may have done it before since she frequented Guyana so often.
Asante D’Aguiar is expected to be passed through the courts on Monday. Ranks at the Customs Anti Narcotics Units, Timehri, had unearthed some 10 kg (22lbs) of cocaine concealed in packets of baking powder which were in the luggage of D’Aguiar.
She was at the time attempting to board a flight back to her adopted homeland when she was nabbed.
According to sources, CANU ranks acting on information nabbed the woman as she was attempting to smuggle the drugs out of the country; they noted that the suspect was acting in a suspicious manner.
A search was conducted and the drugs were found neatly packed in her suitcases in baking powder packets.
The woman is presently in police custody assisting with investigation. The estimated street value of the cocaine is around $10M.
During the last three months there have been over three major drug busts both inside and outside of Guyana. These include the cocaine found in pepper sauce, cocaine in furniture and the 22 pounds of cocaine which was found in Wakenaam.
Last December drug agents made a huge bust when they unearthed some 376 kilos of cocaine which was hidden in pepper sauce cartoons.
One shipment was busted on December 8 in Brunswick Canada and the other was in US Virgin Island St Croix on December 24.
Two Guyanese, Orlando Watson and Reginald Rodriguez, were sought by CANU. The two are now believed to be in neighbouring Venezuela and Suriname respectively.
Meanwhile, another drug bust was the cocaine in furniture. The suspect, Nymrod Singh, was caught in Bartica almost two weeks after the police sought him. CANU had believed that Singh may be a link to this shipment and its mover. Some 22 pounds of cocaine was found when the Joint Services made a raid at a house in Ridge Village, Wakenaam. At the time of discovery of the cocaine, no one was at home.
During the course of the operation some residents were badly beaten, including a 17-year-old lad, who is currently being treated at a health facility in Parika, East Bank of Essequibo. One man was also made to lie in an ant nest while he was beaten.
Kaieteur news understands that the police were looking for a man named ‘Red Head’ but have so far failed to find him.
One man had been arrested in connection with the cocaine find.
