Most of the country’s hockey clubs have accepted an invitation to participate in the Old Fort Hockey Club’s Seven-a-Side ‘Retreat’ Tournament which is slated to be staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club in Linden on March 10.
According to a release from the Club, the aim of the inaugural tournament is to help stimulate interest in the sport in the community which once had a vibrant arm within the sport’s fraternity.
All proceeds from the sale of food and drinks during the day’s activity will be used exclusively to purchase equipment for the fledgling junior hockey programme in Linden.
Clubs are encouraged to enter as many teams as they wish in order to have maximum participation.
President of the club Ivor Thompson said that it is envisaged that all clubs affiliated to the Guyana Hockey Board support the venture so that they can all share a day of fun and good competition, but more importantly help spread the image of the game.
Apart from the hosts, among the teams expected to enter at least two teams are Georgetown Cricket Club, Hikers, Western Dragons and a combination from Linden.
