O’Neil Joseph prevails in Race walking season opener

The Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club (CSTC) opened its season with a 5 lap race walk around the inner circuit of the National Park last Sunday but the highly anticipated rivalry between national Race Walk champion, Rudolph Mitchell and O’Neil Joseph failed to materialize.
Reports are that Mitchell sustained an injury during practice sessions and did not recuperate enough to participate. Joseph took advantage of Mitchell’s absence and finished in the first place over Jeremy Cornelius and Andre Caine who finished in the third and fourth positions, respectively.
Donna Ramkisson continued her dominance in the female category with a first place spot over June Joseph while Maurice Fagundes copped the first place prize in the veteran category and Glayson Ralph won in the junior category.
The walkers competed for trophies donated by Public Service Minister, Dr Jennifer Westford, The Guyana Post Office Corporation, The National Sports Council and Ricks and Sari Ltd.
Meanwhile the next event on the CSTC calendar is the ‘Forbes Burnham Anniversary Race Walk’ billed for this Sunday, February 22. The race starts at the Burnham Bust, Public and Vlissengen Road, Kitty, proceed south along Vlissengen Road and east into the Botanic Gardens. The race will end at the Place of the Seven ponds. Once again, the race walkers will compete for trophies and other prizes. The organizers are also optimistic that Mitchell will recover enough to compete. Participants are asked to be at the starting line by 06:00hrs for a prompt start at 06:30 hrs.
