2009 will continue to see hectic cricket activity in the Ancient County of Berbice. Last week, the Berbice Cricket Board of Control in association with Martin Singh of Associated Business Services and Spready’s Bakery formalised plans for two competitions.
Associated Business Services will sponsor the first division 40 overs, while Spready’s Bakery has confirmed sponsorship for an under-19 round robin; both competitions are new and were launched last Thursday at the Board Office, Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam.
BCBC Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster at the presentation disclosed that both Associated Business Services and Spready’s Bakery have pumped $200,000 into each competition.
The first division tournament would be known as the “ABS 40 over knock-out Cup” and would feature the 12 first division teams in the county – West Berbice, Blairmont, Police, Bermine, Rose Hall Canje, Young Warriors, Albion, Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar, Port Mourant, Kildonan, Scotsburg and Skeldon.
The winner would pocket $50,000 and the championship trophy with the losing finalist receiving $25,000 and a trophy. Individual incentives will be for the player of the finals, best batsman and best bowler.
The Spready’s Bakery under 19 tournament would see over fifty (50) teams across the County competing. They would be divided into 8 zones with the winner of each zone moving on to the quarter-finals.
The overall winner would cart off $40,000 and trophy while the runner-up is guaranteed $25,000.
Both Treasurer Anil Beharry and President Keith Foster expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their coming on board despite difficult economic challenges.
President Foster assured that the money would be used for its intended purpose and that the tournaments would be well organised and promoted.

He disclosed that the BCBC would be making every effort to play tournaments at each level- under 15, under 17, 19, 23, females, 2nd and 1st division. Tournaments will also be played at the Inter Zone level.
Managing Director of ABS Accounting Martin Singh stated that last year he was pleased with the positive developments that took place in Berbice Cricket and as such made a decision to get on board. He also said he was concerned over the high rate of drug abuse among youths and as such he wanted to play a part in the efforts to keep them away from this scourge and ensure they are gainfully occupied.
Nazimool Fudadin, Manager of Spready’s Bakery expressed his company’s delight at being associated with Berbice Cricket and was optimistic that the tournament would unearth new talent, the likes of Sewnarine Chattergoon, Assad Fudadin and Brandon Bess.
Meanwhile, the BCBC is inviting all interested cricket clubs with under 19 teams to register at the board office as soon as possible.
Players born on or after September1st 1990 would be allowed to participate.
The Berbice selectors will assess the performances of players in this tournament to select their team for the 2009 Inter County tournament.
