Mohamed Deen, a former equipment worker who was previously working with Region Four, was dismissed by the Region for not coming to work four days in the future.
Deen presented his termination letter, dated March 12, 2008, to this newspaper, and it read: “You were absent from work for period 16-19 March, 2008 without submitting a reason.”
The former equipment operator made it clear that he was unsure how he could have been dismissed for not coming to work on a date that had not even been reached.
The letter was from the Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Four, and was copied to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the Secretary of the Public Service Commission (PSC), and the Deputy Regional Executive Officer of the Region.
According to Deen, he queried with the PSC the strange circumstances under which he was terminated, and was told that the REO did not have the authority to terminate his services. The PSC reportedly wrote to the REO, questioning Deen’s termination, but nothing was done, Deen said.
Deen has filed a writ at the courts on January 5, 2009, giving the Region ten days (from the date when the writ was filed) to respond.
