Dear Editor,
Smoking has been identified as a health hazard for quite some time now. In spite of well recognised and documented ill effects of smoking, an increased percentage of Guyanese youths are picking up this deadly habit.
Considering the frightening visible effects of smoking, it is difficult to understand why so many youths are indulging in this unpleasant, dirty and pointless habit. Whether one views it as an individual choice or physical addiction, it is a risky behaviour that is difficult to quit.
For the tobacco industry, the frightening statistic of smoking means nothing; their primary aim is to survive so they specifically target youths to replace smokers that have died or quit. The industry has found very lucrative advertisement media in movies and television; these show advertisements glamorizing young attractive men and women inhaling the killer weed and giving it that added “cool” factor.
The government on the other hand has shouted itself hoarse hoping to convince its citizens of the dangers associated with smoking, but the inadequacy of extensive public service oriented propaganda has done little to cut down the impact that tobacco has made on our youths. Stephen Bourne
