The Mayor and City Council arbitration panel met at the Supreme Court library on Monday as they continued to complete the compulsory arbitration process.
After much deliberation the meeting was adjourned and the next meeting is slated for tomorrow. From all indications the parties are likely to come to a decision at this meeting.
Since 2007 the Guyana Labour Union and the Mayor and City Council have been in discussion on a number of issues. These include leave passage assistance for workers, severance payments, a refund of the pension, the restructuring of the redundancy clause, as well as a 10 percent increase for workers.
However the parties have failed to come to a mutual agreement. As such they decided to go to arbitration.
Following the agreement to go to arbitration, there arose another issue. City Hall was calling for three arbitrators while the Union was calling for one.
After the parties could not reach an agreement the Union threatened to take industrial action.
Eventually the Ministry of Labour intervened and both parties are now engaged in discussions with three arbitrators appointed by the Ministry of Labour.
City Hall is however maintaining that they do not have any extra money to pay workers which the union is demanding.
