Residents fearful outages
will stretch into Xmas
Residents on the West Coast of Demerara have reported frequent power outages in the past few weeks, and have expressed their fear that the power problems they face will continue into the holiday season.
“I ain’t understand dis ting!” said a Den Amstel resident. “From lunchtime till now (approximately 19:00 hours), de light jus gone off!” The power failures have plagued the West Coast for sometime now, and have been reported from Tuschen all the way to Harlem.
The residents lament the fact that they are at the mercy of the power company, and there is nothing they can really do except hope for the best.
The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Company has promised that there would be adequate power for the holiday season.
As a step towards ensuring this, the power company brought in some additional generators earlier this month, which it (GPL) is renting at a total cost of US$165, 000 to help cope with the increased demand for
electricity.
The company is presently operating at full capacity, and Chief Executive Officer of GPL, Bharrat Dindyal, had noted: “We are now faced with Christmas… What happens every year from about mid-September to December is that there is a marked increase on the demand…our demand this year has exceeded our peak last year, which is what is seen around Christmas time.”
