The M35 Browning pistol that was recently stolen from an army vessel has been recovered.
Army sources say that the weapon and 12 matching rounds were found yesterday in the possession of a Coast Guard rank. The rank and two civilians are currently in police custody.
Army officials reported on Tuesday that the firearm and 37 rounds of 9mm ammunition were stolen from the small arms magazine aboard the GDFS Essequibo, which was moored alongside the wharf at Coast Guard headquarters.
An official said that every effort is now being made to recover the remaining 25 missing rounds.
The army release stated that several officers and ratings of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard are assisting with the investigations.
The army got a tip from a woman said to be associated with the detained Coast Guard rating. The source could not say why the rating insisted on holding on to the weapon, although the news of its disappearance was made known.
The army did not say when the weapon was lost.
The army has not yet recovered all of its AK-47s which went missing in 2006.
