Vision Guyana recently placed numerous full page advertisements in Kaieteur News to solicit the views of citizens who feel that they have been victimised by this administration.
This initiative started after Vision Guyana learnt of Adam Harris’s plight of not being paid in over sixteen years for his service in Government employ. Chairman of Vision Guyana, Peter Ramsaroop, who is personally heading the campaign along with his support staff, has received hundreds of calls from citizens around the country.
During an interview with this newspaper, Ramsaroop said that he has spoken to most of the individuals that responded, and sometimes he was brought to tears listening to how many people have suffered.
He emphasised that many of the calls are for National Insurance Scheme payments.
According to Ramsaroop, some of the persons he spoke with have been going to NIS for over 10 years, with as much documentation as they can, but most come away empty-handed.
One individual, Ms., K. Persaud, whose husband has died, has been trying for more than four years to get the man’s NIS sorted out.
Ramsaroop also said that many from the bauxite company in Linden, who retired years ago, have not received their NIS, because of poor record-keeping.
He said that he is very concerned about the poor service of NIS, as described by the citizens.
Another individual who responded to the victim list is a contractor who received a contract to build a road but is still owed $11.9M.
The contractor pointed out that although Cabinet had approved the payment, he is still to be paid. Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon has had his files for almost 10 years. “The worst part of collecting this information is that it is mostly the elderly that are suffering,” Ramsaroop said.
Vision Guyana, an organisation dedicated to making the lives of Guyanese better through programmes in community activities, investment and sports, plans to continue the venture. “It is the hope that, as more information is publicized, public figures and entities that discriminate against the citizens will be exposed.”
The party chairman also emphasised that he was even more concerned that NIS may be delaying solving these problems because it has invested citizens’ money in the Berbice Bridge.
