Generating sets arrive to avert ‘Dark Christmas’
The three 1.6 megawatt Caterpillar generating sets that the Guyana Power and Light will be renting at a cost of US$55,000 per month from Miami, USA, for two months, arrived in the country yesterday.
The generating sets arrived at John Fernandes Wharf and were offloaded in the presence of GPL’s Public Relations Officer (ag) Richard Francois, and other officials of the company.
According to Francois, the generating sets will be immediately transported to GPL’s Sophia station for installation.
According to GPL, generating capacity in Demerara has already been boosted with the addition of 2.2 megawatts to its Versailles unit and 2.5 more units at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara.
A combination of Wartsilla and old Caterpillar generating sets are providing 67 megawatts to Demerara.
GPL’s Chairman, Winston Brassington, had earlier said that customers can rest assured that there are no planned blackouts during Christmas, but cautioned that unit failures and other factors beyond the control of GPL may occur.
Technical problems had been the cause of a series of disruptions in both Demerara and Berbice during October and the early part of November and many of these difficulties have been rectified, according to Cabinet.
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who is the Minister responsible for energy, recently expressed confidence that power generation was back to near normal levels but urged the public to aid the process by conserving electricity. According to Brassington, the Demerara National Grid will be generating some 77 megawatts (MW) of electricity when the Christmas demand is slated for 70MW or just above.
