How can we propose 24-hr service when we don’t have the facilities?

Dear Editor,
It was with some amusement that I read our Foreign Affairs Minister’s comments regarding the opening and closing hours of the Takaktu Bridge.

She stated that Guyana was proposing a 24hrs system and that Brazil had indicated that they were unable to do the same – SN 4/11/08. How can this be possible, Hon. Minister, when Lethem doesn’t even have a 24hrs electricity supply?

How can this be possible when our infrastructure such as roads, electricity and water is still in a very poor condition?

One would assume that when the Minister was discussing the operating hours for the bridge she was intending for it to be implemented from the time the bridge is officially opened.

Unless there is mass infrastructural undertakings around Lethem within the immediate future, for which evidence indicates to the contrary, there is no way that we can provide an efficient and professional 24hrs service in time for the opening of the bridge.

Why our Government Ministers continue making these expansive statements regarding the operation of the bridge, when evidence indicates the opposite, is anybody’s guess.

But then again, such comments from a senior Government Minister may be the first indication that our government is finally awakening to the urgency in improving the infrastructure in Lethem and may be taking action very soon.
Wishful thinking? I hope not!
