Chenapou Red Heat needled Paramakatoi 1-0 in the male match of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block football competition played at Paramakatoi last Sunday.
Elijah Carter powered home the lone and winning goal in the first half to hand his team victory. The ladies contest resulted in Paramakatoi edging Dorms by a similar 1-0 margin, thanks to Carletta Thomas’ first half goal.
The winners and runners-up collected trophies in presentations done by football coach Denis ‘Chow’ Hunte, Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle and Village Captain Noel Thomas. The female winners were also the recipients of jerseys donated by Permanent Secretary Keith Booker.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport, Ninvalle noted that this their effort to decentralise the sport, was received well, noting that they visited several neighbouring villages including Cato where coach Hunte conducted football sessions.
Ninvalle said that Hunte’s sessions were very well received and a request has been made by the Village Captain to have him conduct a longer stint with the youngsters in the area.
The PS disclosed that he will have discussions with Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony to have Hunte return to Paramakatoi. It was noted that Dr. Anthony has been very pleased with the work Hunte has been doing during their programme.
Hunte is due to visit Mabaruma shortly for a stint there, where Inter-Block action is also set to take place.
Ninvalle noted the need for either fulltime coaches or ones who can spend extended time in these interior areas to help the abundance of talent waiting to be tapped.
The village officials also requested sports literature to aid in their knowledge base of the respective sports disciplines, which the ministry will ensure is furnished shortly.
While in the area, the ministry officials presented cricket, volleyball and football gear to Paramakatoi, Chenapou and Cato.
