DCC beat South E’bo to advance to final
City side DCC whipped home team South Essequibo by six wickets Saturday at the Anna Regina ground in Region two to advance to the National final of the Neal and Massy first division 40-overs first division cricket competition.
South Essequibo elected to bat in sunny conditions on a low and slow track and a fair size crowd saw the home team slump from 100-4 to 113 all out in 37 overs.
DCC, spearheaded by a 52-run second wicket stand between Chris Barnwell (34) and Vishal Arjune (26), reached 114-4 in 19 overs to win the loop-sided national semi-final with consummate ease.
Former National under-19 left-hander Norman Fredericks top scored with 31 for South Essequibo while Ravi Beharry (19) and Gewan Singh (16) were the only other batsmen to offer token resistance to the City bowlers as the Essequibans lost their last sixth wicket for 13 runs when Fredericks was removed by off-spinner Denis Squires at 100-5.
Squires (3-14 from 7.1 overs) and leg-spinner Kester Harcourt (2-6 off 3 overs) ripped through the lower order after Barnwell had taken 3-20 from six overs.
After National under-19 opener Trevon Griffith (2) was trapped leg before to Patrick Rooplall at 21-1, Barnwell, a national 20/20 player and Arjune, a former West Indies ‘B’ team batsman staged a recovery with positive cricket on the fast but rough outfield before first class pacer Trevon Garraway finished unbeaten on 22.
