MSC maul Nandy Park, Everest whip UG
By Sean Devers
Malteenoes mauled Nandy Park by 10 wickets in a miss-match, while Everest easily beat University of Guyana (UG) in another one-sided encounter as the Demerara zone of the National Gafoor’s 20/20 cricket competition continued in the City last Friday.
At Malteenoes, the host galloped to 48 without loss replying to Nandy Park’s 45 all out as West Indies under-19 Vice Captain Steven Jacobs finished unbeaten on 29 and Shemroy Barrington, who ended the game with a swept six, not out on 16.
The East Bank side, which looks a long way from first division standard, fell for their second consecutive below-50 total in the competition as five of their regular players failed to turn up.
Ronald Jaisingh (10) was the only batsman to reach double figures for the Rohan Sarjoo-led Nandy Park side as former Guyana first-class player Neil Barry took 5-4 from four overs of medium pace while National under-17 selectee Seon Daniels, Jacobs and Jermaine Joseph picked up a wicket each for MSC.
At Camp Road, former Guyana under-19 player Troy Gonsalves smashed a pugnacious 81 and added 123 for the first wicket with West Indies under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika (66) as Everest reached 207-4 off 20 overs.
Gonsalves was savage on the bowlers and clobbered five fours and three sixes while Chandrika, a prime contender to partner Chris Barnwell at the top of the order in the Guyana One-Day team, counted five fours and three sixes in his entertaining innings.
Denish Ramtahal took 2-22 for UG as former Guyana under-19 captain Sauid Drepaul chipped in with 17 towards the end of the Everest innings.
Set 114 to win from 19 overs after Everest were awarded six penalty runs and an over deducted from the UG innings because of their slow over rate in the Everest innings, UG reached 104-9 when their 19 overs expired despite 34 from Jermaine Reynolds and 17 from Kenroy Joseph.
Left-arm spinner Javeed Rasheed bagged 2-14 while the talented Gonsalves continued his excellent day at the office by taking 2-11 with his leg-spin in winning effort.
