A week after hundreds of dead fish washed up on the Suddie foreshore, on the Essequibo Coast, an investigation has revealed that the situation was due to people dumping fish they had bought from other sources.
Their storage was inadequate, and the fish simply went bad.
A large number of high water fish and catfish were washed up at Suddie foreshore, causing panic along the Essequibo Coast.
It was first believed that this situation arose because of some possible contamination, and, as such, persons had stopped purchasing fish from vendors. Yesterday, officers from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that the catfish was a victim of the dry season.
In the dry season the water becomes saline, and in this instance it affected that particular species of fish.
At present, the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries Department, along with the EPA, is continuing work on the occurrence to address the issue of dumping.
