A squad of 22 players was selected by the Guyana cricket selectors on Thursday
in preparation for next month’s Regional one-day competition.
Set for November 13-26 at a venue still to be finalized by the West Indies cricket Board, the competition could be played in Guyana if Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Chetram Singh has his way although it is understood that the new sponsors are not too keen on Guyana because they have no business links on the South American country which has a rich history of hosting successful regional tournaments at all levels.
Guyana lost to eventual winners Jamaica in the last final under lights in Barbados last year and their 22-man squad includes their four players in the Stanford Superstars team (Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Travis Dowlin and Lennox Cush) along with Test players Narsingh Deonarine, Mahendra Nagamootoo and Sewnarine Chattergoon.
Leon Johnson, Guyana’s newest West Indies ODI player, is also in the squad which also includes former West Indies under-19 players Gajanand Singh, Assad Fudadin, Rajendra Chandrika and Veerasammy Permaul.
Former Guyana under-15 player Ravi Sarwan, the younger brother of Ramnaresh
and Guyana under-19 wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble are is also in the squad which will begin training shortly.
Guyana last won the regional one-day title in 2005 when they beat Barbados at Bourda in near darkness in the KFC Final.
Originally scheduled for Florida from September 27 to October 12, the regional limited overs competition was set to be played outside of the West Indies for the first time since it was introduced in 1976 before it was postponed and the venue changed.
The Guyana training squad read:-Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Assad Fudadin, Gajanand Singh, Leon Johnson, Orin Forde, Deon Ferrier, Ravi Sarwan, Veersammy Permaul, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Derwin Christian, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Trevon Garraway, Brendon Bess, Anthony Bramble, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Travis Dowlin, Lennox Cush, Rajendra Chandrika, Chris Barnwell.
