Guyana yesterday observed ‘Hindi’ Day with a ceremony at the Indian Cultural Centre, where Guyanese were being urged to improve their Hindi vocabulary.
Director of the Indian Cultural Centre, Malti Sahai, said that ‘Hindi’ is still alive among large populations such as Guyana.

She explained that the language has a place in the hearts and lives of the Guyanese people, especially since some of the words are being used by persons in their homes, in the places of worship, and also in celebrations.

Sahai feels that if persons improve the vocabulary of Hindi, then they would have a deeper and better understanding of the language.
She believes that there should be a concerted effort to learn Hindi. She explained that a Hindi word reflects the culture and tradition of the religion.
Since September14, 1949, Hindi has been recognized as the national language of India.
