Thomas United moved into second place in the standings behind leaders BK International Western Tigers following their comprehensive 6-1 win over Houston Stars when rivalry in the Banks Beer division one league continued on Wednesday evening at the Thirst Park ground. In the other clash of the night, Flamingo and Beacon battled to an exciting 2-2 tie.
Thomas, who started the game with eight players, totally outplayed Houston. Netting a brace of goals each for Thomas were Wayne Poulis in the 35th and 57th minutes, Shawn Wright tucking in his one minute apart, 67th and 77th.
Orin Agard was on target in the 71st while Travis Savoury completed the flood in the 7th. Houston’s lone goal came off the boot of G. Sparman in the 16th minute.
In what can be classified as the most exciting match of the league to date, Flamingo and Beacon played to a thrilling 2-2 tie.
Beacon took the lead in the 5th minute when Lumumba Hinds drilled the nets, but that early advantage was cancelled out with Shem Porter’s 13th minute goal.
Thereafter, the battle continued end to end with both teams going after each other. After a very long period without a goal being scored, Beacon again cantered into the lead when striker Sherwin Grimes taped in a shot from a right side pass which saw the goalkeeper going the wrong way.
But as the minutes ticked away, Beacon were growing more and more confident of taking full points but Flamingo found the energy to step up a gear in the final five minutes which brought the required results.
The equalizer was scored from the second of back to back corners. It was taken quickly and short, the end result, Leon Yaw firing past the goalkeeper to level three minutes before full time.
