Bill has rarely enjoyed an evening so much in Guyana. Well done Henry G and Mr Bovell. You put on a splendid musical tribute to (Former) Corporal Keith Waithe in the Officers’ Mess (a place not a description) last Monday night. From beginning to end, it was fun.
Mr Bovell was one of the stars of Carifesta X. He was a star of this night too. Keith did not do bad either. Bill watches for the unusual. You may have noticed. The cadet officer signalling like mad to the bandmaster that the President had arrived by tapping the imaginary pips on shoulder; Asst. Commissioner Bovell on lead guitar at one point, and so on.
The joint was nearly packed for the night. Humping. But please oh please Guyanese, do you have to speak when somebody is playing? It is dissing them by doing that! If you are bored, go out and have a cigarette or sleep or whatever..
Bobby Vieira, the MC, was his usual ebullient self. But it is ‘rave’ not ‘rare’ reviews chief! Keith was the doppelganger Bovell for the night – enticing, conducting and orchestrating musicians and singers. Bill loved his stuff with the Force’s choir and String Band. He loved even more the set with Buxton Fusion. Keith and Deo ‘Shantas Rnot Us’ Singh have fused them (sorry..) into a tight multicultural unit. They show what is possible in Guyana. Not quite Keith’s “New Dawn’ but certainly a way out of darkness. A relevant authority should give them some financial support. Quickly.
Henry did a good speech but did his Cadet Staff officer have to be so fawning about his boss in his intro? We all know the Commish is larger than life -you do not have to state the bleeding obvious. Bill was moving with the music right to the finale of “Hear Aunite Bess’. Then time to mix with old muckers Gail, Sharief, Mr Cgx-again, Carlton J and more.
A great show – fifteen minutes too long but great all the same. Well done Henry, well done Mr Bovell, well done Keith for this and more and small kudos to Bill C for germinating and implanting the idea.
Waithe for the next one..
