September21st is the UN International Day of Peace

DEAR EDITOR,
The UN International Day of Peace, on September 21st 2008, is fast approaching. On this day, the world calls for 24 hours of worldwide ceasefire and non-violence.

The UN appointed this day to celebrate peace through resolution 55/282 in 2001. It is an important means to raise global awareness of the importance of peace and conflict prevention in order to increase the pressure on policy makers, governments and international organisations around the world.

The Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) aims to reach a global consensus on peace building and conflict prevention. We believe the celebration of the 21st of September on a global scale to be a great opportunity to reach this goal.

This year, we would like to see an increasing number of 21st September activities taking place around the world.

We are seeking to mobilise as many individuals, groups and organisations as possible to be active and join in the efforts to make the day a success.

We, therefore, ask you to send us information and material on what you or your organisation has planned for the 21st of September. More specifically, what, why, where, and how you will celebrate this day.

We will put all the gathered material on our website, in addition to sending out regular e-bulletins to our global network. Your planned activities will therefore reach a very large audience.

After the 21st, we will distribute a printed newsletter with all the celebrations held. For an example, please look on http://www.gppac.org/uploads/File/General/GPPAC%20News/news%2010.pdf.

Furthermore, we strongly ask you to use the common slogan ‘People Building Peace’ during your activity on the 21st of September.

With that we hope to reach a global common feeling on the international day of peace and more cohesiveness within the GPPAC campaign. If you wish to know more on what happens on the 21st in your own region, you can contact our Regional Media Focal Points: www.gppac.org/page.php?id=1934.

I hope to receive many activities and initiatives on your behalf to mark the 21st of September in an appropriate way, and to help raise awareness for the devastation of war and the importance of prevention.

I also kindly request that you circulate this to others in order to obtain as many initiatives as possible.
