The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) has called up 29 players to prepare for Guyana’s participation in the NAWIRA Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009 Qualifying Tournament to take place on October 25 and 26 in the Bahamas.
Twelve teams will contest the Regional Qualifier, Guyana, Barbados, Bermuda, BVI, Jamaica, SVG, Cayman, Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico, Canada and USA. The two finalists will qualify for the World Cup which will take place in Dubai next year.
Guyana is the current Caribbean Sevens Champions, winning the Championship for the past two years and is expected to challenge Canada and USA to be amongst the two final teams to go forward to the World Cup.
Preparation for the World Cup Sevens has already begun to build momentum around the world with Regional Qualifiers having already taken place in Europe and South America and about to take place in Oceania.
Automatic qualifiers are Fiji, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Australia, France, Scotland, Argentina and host Union, Arabian Gulf. Uruguay, Portugal, Wales, Georgia, Ireland and Italy have now qualified.
The following players have been named by the GRFU to the National Sevens Squad prior to selection in October for the 12 man National Team: Albert La Rose, Algernon Felix, Allain Crawford, Andrew Gordon, Avery Corbin, Clloyd Prowell, Troy Arjoon, Troy Bascom, Dane Parks, Dwayne Schroeder, Elwin Chase, Jason Tyrell, Leon Greaves, Mugabe Hunte, Mikhali Hughes, Peobo Hamilton, Ryan George, Satesh Samaroo, Terrence Mc Almont, Triston Fraites, Walter George, Matthew Talbot; overseas-based are: Christopher Giles, Claudius Butts, Richard Staglon, Mark Webster, Ronald Mayers, Kevin McKenzie and Theodore Henry.
Practice days at the National Park are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 pm and Sundays at 9:00 am.
First practice game, weather permitting, is fixed for tomorrow at 2:00 pm. Head Coach is Sherlock Solomon and Asst Coach is Clinton Clarke.
