The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter Bloc Football kicked off in the East Coast Village of Buxton in emphatic style yesterday with Annandale (West) needling Brush Dam in an exciting opening game. Their energetic display has set the tone for what is anticipated to be an exciting tournament featuring a number of talented players within the village, old and young.
The winning strike came via the penalty spot in the 33rd minute after Kevin Sullivan deliberately handled the ball in the area and promptly received a red card, compliments of referee Mark Young. The ensuing spot kick was taken by Owen Jacobs who blasted it past goalkeeper Eurston Washington, who was well beaten even though he got a touch.
The encounter was a fast pace duel between two sides that went at each other from the start until the final whistle. Both teams created chances but failed miserably in the attacking third.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary Keith Booker who declared open the competition on behalf of Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who joined the action at the half way mark after attending the Ballot Box Martyrs Cycling race in Berbice.
Booker said the Ministry is hoping that these competitions would keep the players active and out of trouble and remain productive. “We’re hoping that sometime down the line we have female football going in this community and in other communities. Let me congratulate you for supporting this event with such energy.”
Booker promised to give a surprise prize for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the competition.
The MVP will also receive one pair of boots and one ball compliments of Buxtonian Odinga Lumumba, who is also Presidential Advisor on Empowerment.
Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle, who was also present at the opening and delivered brief remarks, disclosed that Polar Ice will be presenting the first place cash prize of $50,000 as well as the runner up prize of $20,000.
