Orlando Michael, originally not part of the Guyana national team chosen to compete at this year’s Caribbean Scrabble Championships in Barbados next month, but was a late entry after James Krakowsky declared himself unavailable, continued his rich vein of form by winning the Caricom Day Open Tournament last Sunday.
Played at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Michael, who ended runner-up to Moen Gafoor at the Earl Vigilance Memorial Open the previous week, finished in the top spot with five games and a positive spread of 588 to relegate two other players with five points apiece by virtue his larger spread.
His father Rudolph Michael closed in the second position with a spread of 261, while national champion Frederick Collins placed third with a spread of 161.
The sixteen-player competition also saw close finishes for the minor spots with two players Grace Hercules and Kampta Ramnarine each securing four wins.
Meanwhile, practice sessions for the national team continue every Tuesday and Thursday at the Malteenoes Sports Club.
The team is expected to depart for Barbados on July 30.
