Director of Starr Computers, Michael G. Mohan yesterday made a contribution of Football and cones to Guyana’s number one Football team Alpha United.
Speaking at a simple handing over ceremony which took place at the Roof Gardens of Starr Computers, Mohan said that he always had a special interest for Soccer (football) which both of his sons started playing at an early age.
Mohan, who is one of the team Managers and Assistant Coach of the Miami Strike Force under-17 team said the sport is one of the things that is close to his heart.
He said he was driven to support the club after driving past their training venue one afternoon and saw them going through their routine.
“I was happy to know that people are actually volunteering their time and trying to encourage the youths to help to get them together and into the sport because I know soccer is a great sport.”
He said the sport is about three different categories of people coming together, the administrators, coaches and volunteers working together to teach the young all about the sport enabling them to become somebody in the future and to keep them off the streets.
The parents and the spectators he said also play a very important role. “I’ve always taken it upon myself to go out there and spend time with the children advising them. It’s really important for parents to be there.”
Players too, he said must understand that in sport it’s not always about just winning, “It’s about going out there having fun, giving your best, respecting the referees and coaches and playing the game as a team.”
Responding on behalf of the team, club President Odinga Lumumba thanked Mohan for such a timely contribution.
“We’re very grateful. I believe football like any sport can only go forward if the corporate sector is involved. It is very costly so we need a lot of money to purchase boots and balls which we have to replace on a regular basis.”
Mohan promised that he would be making contributions of other technical equipment to the club in the near future.
