Fishermen from the Upper Corentyne Fishermen Society are planning a strike for today to demonstrate their disappointment with the Chief Cooperative Development Office (CCDO) and the Fisheries Department for not supporting their decision to suspend the membership of a suspected pirate.
According to an official, intelligence gathering revealed that a member was involved with hijacking activities, and was held in March with a quantity of fish, fish glue and other suspicious articles.
The official said that, in keeping with the rules of the society, the member was suspended.
However, the man made complaints to the CCDO and the Fisheries Department, both of which have sided with him and are now trying to get him reinstated in the society.
This was done, the official said, without them contacting the fishermen for an explanation as to why the man’s membership was suspended.
The fishermen are planning to go to Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud today to relay their concerns.
