(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was represented at the inaugural Western Hemisphere Chiefs of Defence Conference in Washington, D.C., signalling Guyana’s deepening engagement in regional security cooperation.
Colonel General Staff, Kenlloyd Roberts, MSM, attended the February 11–12 forum on behalf of Chief of Defence Staff, Omar Khan, MSS. The high-level conference, hosted by the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, brought together defence chiefs from 33 nations across the hemisphere and wider region. Delegations included 13 CARICOM member states, 15 Latin American countries, Canada, and four European nations with territories in the region, including Denmark.
The two-day engagement examined pressing hemispheric security concerns, including threats posed by foreign terrorist organisations, transnational criminal networks, cyber risks, and other challenges impacting regional stability and prosperity. The conference served as a strategic platform to examine hemispheric security priorities, including risks posed by foreign terrorists’ organisations, transnational criminal organisations, cyber and other threats to the security, stability and prosperity of the hemisphere, GDF said in a press release.
Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening institutional trust, enhancing intelligence sharing, and sustaining consistent engagement among regional defence partners. Discussions underscored the importance of coordinated responses grounded in partnership and mutual confidence. Guyana’s participation reflects its continued commitment to proactive regional engagement and meaningful dialogue on collective defence issues. Through representation at forums of this level, the Guyana Defence Force advances strategic relationships while contributing to broader efforts aimed at strengthening stability and security throughout the hemisphere.
