Kaieteur News – In order to keep the peace and assist with security on election day and beyond, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) has issued a notice seeking to employ ex prison officers and those who would have resigned in good standing to work outside the perimeter of the prison locations to conduct security checks.
The notice further stated that, “Persons will be required to work a shift system 6 to 2, 2 to 10. Persons will be paid a stipend of $100,000 for the period of 14 to 21 days, commencing immediately. If you know of any interested person, please let them contact immediately.”
Additionally, the GPS has also reintroduced its K-9 service as of Friday, August 29, 2025. In a statement via its Facebook page on Saturday, it said that this was done “to enhance operational efficiency within prison facilities in keeping with the organisation’s strategic plan. This investment is in keeping with the Government of Guyana commitment to improve the operations of the prison system, also providing a safe environment for all.”
The approach is expected to further boost security and surveillance, while acting as a deterrence. It will also improve the gathering of intelligence, detect contraband, and support staff in the execution of their duties, the prison service said.
Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, noted that detection dogs are trained to locate the presence of narcotics and other prohibited items. “The keen sense of smell these trained dogs possess, guided by skilled handlers, make them vital assets in combating contraband trafficking in prisons”, Elliot said.
He also emphasised that detection dogs contribute to a safer environment for staff and inmates, as they will identify and remove prohibited items will significantly reduce incidents and disturbances, improving the overall atmosphere in the prison facilities.
