Young adults get 2nd chance at CSEC success despite pregnancy, other setbacks
(Kaieteur News) – Young adults are hailing Morgan’s Learning Centre (MLC) lessons division for giving them a 2nd chance at attaining their academic dreams. Among them is a young mother who was faced with a difficult pregnancy and other health complications in pursuit of the Caribbean Secondary Examinations Certificate (CSEC).
Veronica Sewadhan, 25, told this newspaper, that her journey started as a 10-day worker in Berbice.
“I am from Berbice. I wrote CSEC the first time and didn’t pass. But always wanted the opportunity to do it again. I was looking for the place that would give me the push and support that I needed.”

She recalled that after moving to Georgetown, she was working at a law firm and came across some information on MLC.
“I decided to give them a try because I always wanted a full-time job with the government but I wasn’t qualified.” However, while in pursuit of her studies, Sewadhan faced another setback—a complicated pregnancy.
“I became pregnant and faced some health complications —Preeclampsia, [a serious pregnancy complication that is characterised by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, most often the liver and kidneys.] Morgan’s has a strict policy that you not must miss classes but I was given the pass papers to work and study at home,” she said.
Sewadhan recalled that during the period her fiancé also supported her and encouraged her not to give up.
“There were days when I could not make it and other days when I needed the extra encouragement but I pushed because I wanted to achieve my goal of having CXC subjects.”
Sewadhan recalled that she eventually wrote four CSEC subjects and attained passes in all four subjects. Now, the young mom has more than one reason to celebrate, she gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl. She said that she will be pursuing high learning. “I’ll take a rest for now, wait until my baby grows a bit then I will be able to continue.”
Briana James, another adult learner attached to MLC gained four grade twos in English A, Office Administration, Principles of Accounts, and Principles of Business.

She said, “I’m 20 years old. I came here after failing CSEC. I didn’t really want to come. My mother was like, “Briana, get up, you have to do those subjects but this time, we’re gonna use Morgan’s. And I said, “Okay, I’m gonna give it a try. And after giving it another chance, I cried when I got my results because it was the results that I can finally go somewhere with.”
James is currently enrolled into UG.
Shania Austin, als0 20, gained two grade threes in Integrated Science, Mathematics, two grade twos in Principles of Accounts, and Technical Drawing.
She explained that during high school, she had a bit of a tough time.

“I wasn’t really focusing, and I ended up failing CSEC. And even after I left high school, my mind wasn’t still in the right state, and I failed again, and my parents decided to give Morgan’s Learning Center a try,” she said.
She recalled that though the lessons were challenging, she kept the faith.
She said, “It was tough because I wasn’t getting a lot of sleep, had a lot of studying, a lot of back-to-back classes, but finally I passed. I also came mainly to rewrite Accounts. Last year was my first time writing Accounts. I got a four, and this time writing it, I got a two. And I added Integrated Science and Technical Drawing to my list. Now I’m happy and I am headed to UG to do architecture because I love drawing.”
